Ayrshire Gran ‘Shocked’ After Disabled Parking Bay Outside Her Home Removed Without Notice
An 84-year-old grandmother from Ayrshire has spoken out after discovering that the disabled parking bay outside her home had been removed without any warning.
Nan Geddes, who lives on Glencairn Road in Ayr, returned home on Monday, February 17, to find the parking bay—originally installed right outside her front door—had disappeared.
Bay Moved Without Notice
Nan, who relies on the disabled bay for easy access to her home, said she was left shocked and distressed, explaining:
“I came home from Glasgow at lunchtime and couldn’t believe it when I turned the corner — it was gone. I nearly had a heart attack.”
Although Ayrshire Roads Alliance (ARA) have since placed a new bay across the road, Nan says she was never informed of the change and has been left frustrated trying to get answers.
“Everything had been absolutely fine since I spoke to Ayrshire Live last year. This is completely out of the blue.”
Struggling for Communication
Nan said that despite repeated attempts to contact ARA, including phone calls and messages through neighbours, she has had no response:
“They have been like the ‘Phantom of the Opera’ — impossible to get hold of. I’m at the end of my rope.”
She added:
“If they were going to take it away, I expected a visit, a letter, or even a phone call. I don’t do emails, but they could have phoned me. I went away on Friday and it was there. I came back Monday and it was gone.”
Despite not going out much recently, Nan said she has had no option but to park at her door using her Blue Badge, saying:
“It’s absolutely shocking that this was done without telling me. I’m disgusted.”
Council Response
A South Ayrshire Council spokesperson confirmed that the bay had been removed and relocated due to issues raised by neighbours:
“The disabled parking bay was originally installed in the wrong position by contractors, causing an obstruction to a neighbour’s driveway.
“Additionally, another neighbour has been granted permission to install a driveway, so we had to find a suitable alternative location.
“The bay has now been repositioned across the road, less than 20 metres from Mrs. Geddes’ front door.”
The Council added:
“Ayrshire Roads Alliance officers have made every attempt to communicate with Mrs. Geddes throughout this process.”
Background
Last June, Nan previously spoke to Ayrshire Live, sharing concerns that she felt “trapped” in her home after ARA initially proposed moving the bay. After that interview, she had believed the issue was resolved, saying everything had been “absolutely fine” — until now.
