Ticketed blue badge holder raises questions surrounding Market Square parking in Armagh
A disabled Armagh resident recently received a £90 Parking Charge Notice (PCN) after parking in Market Square, raising concerns about the clarity of parking regulations in the area. The individual, who uses a mobility aid, had displayed her Blue Badge and parked on the cobbled square after failing to find available disabled spaces nearby. Upon returning to her vehicle after a brief absence, she discovered the PCN, noting that other vehicles in the vicinity had not been ticketed.
The Department for Infrastructure clarified that Market Square has double yellow lines with additional kerb markings indicating no loading or unloading at any time. According to Blue Badge guidelines, badge holders are prohibited from parking in such areas. The department also highlighted the availability of designated disabled parking bays on Market Street and near the library, emphasizing that Blue Badge holders can park all day in one-hour limited waiting bays if disabled bays are occupied.
This incident underscores the importance of understanding specific parking restrictions, even for Blue Badge holders, to avoid penalties. It also highlights the need for clear signage and public awareness to prevent similar situations in the future.
